Reminder from Cornell Lab of Ornithology: "An important word of caution about this striking and photogenic species--the birds we see in the states are already stressed, since they moved from locations in the north due to a lack of food. One of the southeast Wisconsin Snowy Owls in Ozaukee County was seen for a few days and then found dead by a farmer. Apparently the bird was extremely emaciated, so it likely starved to death. While very beautiful and often approachable, life for them can at times be very difficult, and keeping a good distance so as not to disturb them is the best approach."

Thanks for this. I'm a radio reporter and going out with someone from Audubon today, December 9th -- hopefully we'll find a snowy owl -- if not, if you're in Washington State, perhaps I can try again with you -- and/or get your point of view for the radio feature I'll produce?

Wonderful! Great little history lesson - I didn't know that our visionary politicians actively saved this huge tract of land. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Woody, excellent work !! Scared people revert to religious myths as a source of comfort; how do we lead them to read your analysis?

Boy, you picked on the "big issue" this time. I occasionally receive emails debunking Climate change (warming) science. Debunking science appears to have reached cult status. I can't call it anything else.
I have turned to what is now my favorite tool: http://www.skepticalscience.com/argument.php
Here you will find hard science in clear language to counter every objection. It's the best site I have discovered on this topic. But, unfortunately, it does not change peoples minds. We do indeed seem to be facing a "well oiled" cult... pun definitely intended.

As always, Woody, enjoy reading your insightful words. I am sure you reached a 'boiling point' as you drafted your comments. Read David Brooks today - a similar scenario of bull-headed denial.

Woody,
You have stated this so well.
About two months ago I was on my deck and a healthy female coyote stepped out of the forest and paused sideways 20 feet from me, before slipping back into the trees. She was all grace, efficiency and calmness. She was a reminder we are still, however forgetful, a part of nature.
Fear? Fear only the possibility that children today have ever reduced opportunities to know they live in the connected world of nature. When they grow up how far will they have to travel to see a shy coyote or black bear?
I hope your article gives pause to those who have learned to fear these animals. They might instead reflect upon ways to put nature back into their lives: birding, photography, art, anything to renew the bonds to life that underpin our humanity.
