Photos: From English Ivy monoculture to diverse native plant showcase

On April 10th, 2011, my neighbors and I planted 28 plants, completing the restoration of Seattle’s oldest and one of its largest traffic circles.  Kinnickinnick was the final plant installed — the last of 1,000+ native plants and four trees to grace the 5,500 square-foot circle.  Now we enter the stewardship phase, transitioning from planting to weeding and watering.

Although today’s circle has the raw look of a newly planted landscape, Bleeding Heart, Oregon Grape and Yellow Wood Violet are already blooming and other plants have grown significantly.  Our neighborhood sense of community has also bloomed and grown, making this project even more gratifying.
