Looking Up

Looking Up

“Looking up from the flatlands, birds and clouds floating by…I’d say that heaven’s a thousand feet high. It’s my home in the sky, my home in the sky, hawk makes a circle through which swallows fly.” -Greg Brown

A lot of people look down these days, at phones, IPODs and sometimes their feet. Perhaps they should receive a special Earth Day text message that encourages them to unplug and engage their senses instead. If they bothered to look up and listen they might notice something interesting – even inspiring.

Three days ago, I heard the familiar broken flute call of the Bald Eagle in my north Seattle back yard. I surveyed the tree tops to no avail, but then heard it again. This time I looked straight up and saw a Bald Eagle soaring, its wings flat and black against the blue sky. There was a lot of chattering for just one bird. Sure enough, soon I saw another, and another, until a total of five Bald Eagles were soaring over my house. I ran inside to get the camera, and started taking pictures in the sky.

But the point is to look up. Not only eagles are out this time of year but so are Osprey, Turkey Vultures, a variety of hawks and several species of swallows, along with many other bird species.  You can add to your daily enjoyment of life by checking out the sky.
